Everything you need to know before you begin.
PhotoCorral is designed to make a large Windows photo collection easier to find, organise and use without turning photo management into another complicated job.
Getting started
What is PhotoCorral?
PhotoCorral is a Windows desktop photo catalogue, organiser and editor. It helps you bring photographs from folders, drives and supported portable devices into one catalogue so you can find them again by date, people, places, Collections and other catalogue tools.
Which versions of Windows does PhotoCorral support?
PhotoCorral is designed for 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11. It is a Windows desktop application and is not a macOS application.
Which languages are available?
The PhotoCorral interface supports English, Italian, French, German and Spanish.
Changing the interface language does not rename your photo files, metadata values, folder paths or text you have entered yourself.
Can I try PhotoCorral before installing it?
Yes. The PhotoCorral Web Demo uses a sample catalogue and lets you explore many of the catalogue and search workflows directly in your browser.
The browser demo is a demonstration rather than the complete installed Windows application, so some editing functions are intentionally unavailable.
Photos, files and importing
Does PhotoCorral move or delete my original photographs?
PhotoCorral’s normal Add to Catalog workflow creates a managed catalogue copy while leaving the source original untouched.
Catalogue organisation such as People, Places, dates and Collections does not require you to keep moving the source original from one folder to another.
What image formats can PhotoCorral work with?
PhotoCorral supports common photo formats including JPEG, PNG, TIFF, WebP and HEIC/HEIF, together with supported camera RAW files.
HEIC/HEIF support also depends on the appropriate Windows codec support being installed on the computer.
Can PhotoCorral work with RAW photographs?
Yes. PhotoCorral supports compatible camera RAW files and provides RAW development and adjustment tools while keeping the original RAW source file intact.
Can I import photographs from an iPhone?
Yes, provided Windows can recognise and access the iPhone. The phone may need to be unlocked and you may need to approve the trust or access prompt on the device.
PhotoCorral includes a preparation stage while Windows makes the device available, followed by scanning and import controls.
What happens if a photograph has no reliable capture date or GPS location?
PhotoCorral uses reliable capture and location metadata when it is available. If that information is missing, the photograph can remain undated or unlocated until you correct it manually with Edit Date & Location.
This avoids substituting potentially misleading file dates or device dates for the true date a photograph was taken.
Organising and finding photographs
Do I need to reorganise all my Windows folders before using PhotoCorral?
No. One of the main advantages of a catalogue is that you can improve how photographs are organised and discovered without first rebuilding years of folders manually.
Can I create my own Collections and Subcollections?
Yes. Collections let you organise photographs according to subjects, events, projects or anything else that is useful to you. You can also create Subcollections for a more detailed structure.
Collection membership does not require another physical copy of the photograph.
How does People work?
PhotoCorral can detect and group faces and lets you assign names to people in your catalogue. Once people are named, you can browse photographs associated with them from the People section.
Face processing is designed to run locally on your computer.
How does Places work?
When reliable GPS information exists, PhotoCorral can use it to organise photographs geographically under Places. Location information can also be added or corrected manually.
PhotoCorral can build a geographic hierarchy so photographs can be browsed through broader and more specific locations.
What is Semantic Search?
Semantic Search gives you another way to find photographs when you remember what appears in the picture rather than its filename or folder.
For example, you might search for subjects such as cake, beach, dog or car. Semantic Search is designed to operate locally on your Windows computer.
Can I browse photographs by date?
Yes. The By Date view lets you browse photographs chronologically using reliable catalogue date information. Dates can also be corrected manually when necessary.
Editing, privacy and safety
Does PhotoCorral include photo editing?
Yes. PhotoCorral includes editing and adjustment tools for compatible photographs, including automatic and manual adjustments, selective masks, retouching, black-and-white conversion, colourisation, Bokeh/depth effects and other photo adjustments.
Can I export edited photographs?
Yes. PhotoCorral can export photographs in common formats including JPEG, PNG, TIFF and WebP. Exporting creates a new output file rather than replacing your source original.
Does PhotoCorral upload my photo library to the cloud?
PhotoCorral is built around local catalogue storage and local processing. Features such as People recognition and Semantic Search are designed to work on the Windows computer rather than requiring your photo library to be uploaded to a cloud photo service.
What does Catalogue Backup & Restore protect?
Catalogue Backup & Restore protects the PhotoCorral catalogue and the organisation stored within it.
It is not a replacement for backing up your actual photo files. Your photographs should still be protected with your normal file-backup system or storage strategy.
